Silverchair were an Australian rock band formed in 1992, who got their big break when they won a national demo competition conducted by SBS TV show Nomad and ABC radio station Triple J.They were active from 1992 to 2011, which is when they announced their “indefinite hibernation”. Frogstomp, their debut album, was released by Epic Records US on 20 June 1995. It has since been certified double platinum status and has sold close to 8 Million copies worldwide.
When I started drafting this review last week, I’d only given this album a few listens and already I liked what I’d heard. Over this past week, it is fair to say that I have fallen head-over-heels in love with it, and the rest of Silverchair’s five album discography. I don’t think I’ve listened to a whole lot else over the past seven days.
Frogstamp would definitely appeal to those who are keen on the Grunge genre, and to anyone who listens to Nirvana. This album has been criticized for being ‘immature’ lyrically because Silverchair’s sound in this album (released shortly after Cobain’s death) was very similar to Nirvana, but it’s still a valiant effort from the Silverchair boys (Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies, Chris Joannou), who were only 15 at the time of release.
That being said, this album has particular merit in terms of its totally sick bass lines and although the lyrics can be seen as similar to the works of Kurt Cobain, they were, and still are somewhat relatable to teenagers and the adolescent experience. Daniel Johns had a wonderful voice even at such a young age and if you listen to their last works such as “Young Modern” (2007) you can hear the change of maturity in his tone; the contrast is incredible. Listen to the first single released off this album, which Daniel Johns fondly refers to as “Our Grunge song” .
Silverchair matured over the years as they too grew up, producing four more studio albums, essentially perfecting their unique sound.
4 out of 5 stars and a thorough recommendation from me.
